Gems of Gothic and Renaissance architecture in Venice can be found in the districts of Cannaregio and Castello. This is where you can see three veritable gems: the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, the Confraternity of San Marco and the largest church in the city, SS. Giovanni e Paolo. The Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli was built at the end of the 15th century, to preserve a small wooden panel representing the Virgin Mary, which was regarded as miraculous. This tiny church was for centuries the destination of pilgrims and features a stunning interior lavishly decorated with precious marbles, truly one of a kind.

Two more gems of Gothic and Renaissance architecture in Venice are not far from the Miracoli Church.  Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo is one of the favorite destination for Venetians who indulge sitting in this lovely square sipping coffee and chatting. It all looks almost like a theatrical set, framed by remarkable buildings. SS. Giovanni e Paolo, the largest church in the city, was built for the Dominican monks in the 14th century. This was where the funerary ceremonies of the city governors were celebrated, following a nightly solemn procession. As a result, it has always been known as the Pantheon of the Doges.

Adjacent is the Scuola Grande di San Marco, an extraordinary example of local early Renaissance architecture. This was the

home to a secular confraternity, known as ‘scuole’ in Venice, the members of which were wealthy merchants committed to philanthropy. The interior is lavishly decorated and reflects the wealth of the patrons.
